Bitwise Just Swapped Two Coins in Its Big Crypto Index — Here’s What That Signals
Bitwise dropped Polkadot and Avalanche from its top-10 crypto index fund and added Hyperliquid — here's what that reshuffle means for your bags.

One of the world’s biggest crypto index funds just changed its lineup, and the shuffle says a lot about where big money thinks the market is heading. Bitwise has rebalanced its 10 Crypto Index Fund (BITW), removing Polkadot (DOT) and Avalanche (AVAX) and replacing them with Hyperliquid’s HYPE token, according to Coinpedia.
If you’ve never heard of a “rebalance,” think of it like a grocery store swapping out a slow-selling brand for a new one that’s flying off the shelves. BITW tracks the top digital assets by market size, trading activity and other criteria, and it periodically drops coins that have fallen behind in favor of ones gaining ground. This time, that meant Hyperliquid earned a seat at the table while Polkadot and Avalanche got bumped.
Why Hyperliquid Made the Cut
Hyperliquid, a decentralized platform for trading perpetual futures, had a breakout first half of 2026. Coinpedia reports the platform processed $1.34 trillion in trading volume and generated $320 million in protocol revenue during that period, while its native HYPE token climbed 165% year-to-date — one of the strongest runs among large-cap cryptocurrencies this year.
That performance was enough to land HYPE a 0.93% weighting in the BITW portfolio, with the token’s market cap sitting at $14.9 billion, per Coinpedia. The report also notes HYPE-focused ETFs have pulled in more than $100 million in cumulative net inflows this year, even though those funds recently logged their first daily outflow after 16 straight days of inflows. In plain terms: institutional appetite for HYPE has been strong, even if it’s not immune to the occasional cooling-off day.
Bitcoin and Ethereum Still Run the Show
Before anyone gets too excited about the newcomer, it’s worth remembering that Bitcoin still dominates this index by a wide margin. Coinpedia reports Bitcoin holds a 77.54% allocation in BITW, backed by a $1.25 trillion market cap, followed by Ethereum at 13.04% and a $209.5 billion market cap.
XRP (4.21%) and Solana (2.78%) round out the bigger positions, while smaller weightings go to Cardano (0.39%), Stellar Lumens (0.38%), Chainlink (0.34%), Litecoin (0.21%) and Sui (0.17%), according to the report. Stellar’s return to the index is notable too — Coinpedia attributes it to growing interest in tokenized assets and blockchain-based payments, a trend that’s been quietly building even without much headline attention.
What This Means If You’re Holding DOT or AVAX
Getting dropped from an index doesn’t mean a project is dead. Coinpedia reports that Polkadot and Avalanche simply no longer met BITW’s market cap and weighting thresholds after being overtaken by faster-growing assets like HYPE and Stellar during this review cycle. Both networks remain active and continue development as usual.
Still, for everyday holders, this kind of reshuffle is a useful gut check. Index funds like BITW are built to track where institutional capital and trading activity are actually flowing, not just where the hype (pun intended) is loudest on social media. If you’re holding DOT or AVAX, this doesn’t mean it’s time to panic-sell, but it’s a signal worth noting: the assets institutions consider “top tier” can and do change, and it pays to periodically ask whether the coins in your own wallet still stack up against the competition.
